Independence Day

The Filipinos celebrate their independence from Spanish rule on June 12th. Or rather, the Filipino government does – its a national holiday, but most Filipinos don’t actively participate and the only real public celebration is the one in Rizal Park (pictured) that’s put on for the president. If it hadn’t been for the Lonely Planet it might well have passed me by. Manila Day, which happened a few weeks later might also have done, if I hadn’t tried to visit immigration that day only to find it closed.
